Volcanoes and the White Island of Camiguin by Pinky McBanon
Camiguin. It is such a beautiful name for an island of volcanoes. A pear-shaped paradise south of Philippines is one of the country's top destinations. Being a volcanic island, its soil proved to be the best ground for planting corn, coconut, coffee, palay, copra and other crops. It is no wonder that you'll also find hot/cold springs, waterfalls, tropical rainforests, black/white sand beaches and awesome volcanic formations in here.
With seven volcanoes under its belt, it is incomparable to any other in Southeast Asia. The names of volcanoes are Mt. Vulcan or Old Volcano, Uhay, Hibok-Hibok or Catarman, Timpoong, Guinsiliban, Tres Marias and Mambajao. Contrary to its name, the youngest volcano among them is Mt. Vulcan. The tallest is Mt. Timpoong while the biggest is Mt. Mambajao.
Mt. Hibok-Hibok is the only active volcano in the island. The last eruption in 1951 created a havoc of lava and poisonous gases killing 3000 people in the process. Currently, it is considered quiet but PHIVOLCS (Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) continues to monitor its seismic behavior. If you want to climb this volcano, it is recommended that you consult first PHIVOLCS observatory located at 396 meters up on the volcano's slope to determine safety of travel. Mountaineers consider this a challenging climb because of its boulders, loose stones and sharp rocks. It would also be wise to avoid the pitcher plants in the rocks. At 3-5 hours climb, you'll reach the peak. You'll see the crater lake with steam vents around. On a bright day, you'll have magnificent views of Surigao in the east, Bohol in the north and Siquijor in the west. When you descent, make your way to Ardent Springs at the foot of the mountain. A hot spa is all you need to soothe away your sore muscles. For some people, they believe soaking in this water with sulfur content can cure their illnesses.
Because of the island's volcanic origin, the beaches are mostly black sands. For white sand beaches, head to White Island or Medan Island. It is a sand bar that can be I-shaped or C-shaped depending on the tide, with Mt. Vulcan and Hibok-Hibok as your background. Sands are powdery and the water is crystal blue. It is best enjoyed early in the morning. There are no trees here or vegetation but native huts are available now for visitors to shelter them from the scorching sun. You can swim, snorkel and even collect shells in White Island.
Camiguin is the nicest place you'll ever be. Peaceful, scenic and unspoilt.
